Once again, six Alchemists were recognized during the College of Engineering Recognition Rites last April 28, 2014 for receiving various awards. They are Alexander John Cruz, the sole summa cum laude for BS Chemical Engineering (BS ChE), for receiving the Professor Teodorico Festin Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering; Alex and his group mates in Chemical Engineering Research (ChE 144), Reynaldo Marquez Jr. and Florence Jane Zurbano, were also awarded for finishing second place in the 2014 Undergraduate Project Competition; Rosely Peña, UP ALCHEMES President for AY 2013-2014, for receiving the Garrick Yao Memorial Award for Service; Edsel John Serrano for receiving the Dominador I. Ilio Award for the Most Outstanding All-Around Graduating Student; and not to be forgotten is our very own adviser, Engr. Patrick D. Ramoso, for being awarded the Most Outstanding Engineering Instructor.
These awards are merely bonuses for showing SHAPE in their lifelong journey as Alchemists. Along with the rest of the UP ALCHEMES Graduates from Class 2014, may they realize that these awards (merely finishing the degree is included as an award) do not signify the end of a stage in their lives, but the start of their “real life,” their careers as the country’s next chemical engineers.
For the rest of us, including the Alumni, may the Class of 2014, especially the awardees, inspire us to continue to embody SHAPE in our daily lives. Endlessly applying Service, Humility, Academics, Professionalism and Excellence from studying for an exam in our favorite ChE subject to organizing an event of the organization and even in our interactions with our family, friends and of course, our fellow Alchemists.
